St. Mary’s University College (Calgary)

Portfolio Description

St. Mary’s University College is located on a historic site in Calgary near Fish Creek Park. Buildings that now house classrooms, once homed orphans and aging Calgarians. Built in 1921, the water tower on site has been renovated and reborn as the Mauro Gallery. Generous donations from Tom and Debra Mauro, paired with the Government of Alberta’s heritage and preservation initiatives, have given new life to the tower.

Patience, a representative of St. Mary’s, knew what story she wanted to tell, but was unsure of how to marry it with the space. She was thankful to find that “Resolve was a one-stop-shop.” We gave advice on how to layout the space, and provided printing and framing based on the gallery dimensions given.

This was a great project with a tight deadline and a very specific budget. Images were supplied from the school’s archives and contemporary photographers. With the college’s needs in mind, we recommended printing on Ilford Smooth Pearl, a luster photo paper that works with a variety of images. Clean and simple black frames, and white or no mat, were used to keep consistency across the diverse images.

Sometimes simplicity is the answer. The black frames suit the restored wood well, giving a contemporary feel to a historically charged space. The college now has a visual space to discuss history and culture. The exhibition opening will take place in early June 2018.
